Greene County Schools: Supports Medical Professionals and Maintains STEM School of Distinction Accolade
|
Greene County Schools (GCS) developed a comprehensive K-12 STEM Education program because of the need for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to support the various regional careers that require a new way of thinking. Strategies That Engage Minds has become the new mantra in classrooms. During this time of uncertainty, GCS continues to support students with a variety of distance learning. We are also reaching out to support our regional medical professionals. After a Greene Central High School (GCHS) teacher read an article on ear straps that were being 3D printed, he decided to act. Medical professionals wear facemasks as a way to protect themselves while helping their patients. A more comfortable strap can be 3D printed. Over 100 straps have been 3D printed at GCHS and GCMS for healthcare workers at local and regional medical centers. GCHS has always contributed to the regional medical workforce through the school's Health Science career pathway. Now GCHS and GCMS is supporting the efforts of those on the front lines treating COVID-19.
North Carolina has developed an application process to identify and recognize exemplary STEM Schools and STEM Programs. We are proud to share that GCHS will continue to be recognized as a STEM School of Distinction under the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's (NCDPI) STEM Recognition Program. GCS STEM offers a full range of rigorous educational opportunities through various learning styles that provide connected experiences between school and society. Students utilize 21st Century Skills by shaping arguments and solving problems in each course through the continuous process of asking questions, designing, engineering, and gathering evidence. Teachers provide students with many opportunities that meet or challenge their individual abilities. Students completing 16 rigorous course requirements that include a combination of Advancement Placement, STEM, Honors, Online, or College level courses can earn STEM Scholar Recognition at graduation. Greene County Schools' Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) Education initiatives will assist students in realizing their potential by supporting their exploration of STEM-related careers, develop multi-cultural relationships within teams to collaboratively solve problems by encouraging the development of 21st-Century skills, provide an inquiry curriculum with valuable life lessons, and by supporting their post-secondary or credentialing education to solve tomorrow's global issues. |
Greene County Stem Program Helps Brighten Christmas for Kids
Each year the Greene County Middle School Jr. STEM Ambassadors and advisor Samantha Haislip host a toy drive for Toys For Tots. This year will be the sixth year that the students have organized the event to collect toys for local families in need. Students help assemble and wrap boxes, create flyers, and publicize the event.
