The Center for Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (CESTEM) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington would like to invite you to three exciting summer workshops!
Extreme Science Workshop:
Join us for this workshop which emphasizes strategies to connect the Essential Standards for grades 6-8 with topics such as types of scale, measurement, estimation and models of scale, powers of ten, limits to size, surface area to volume relationships, and behaviors at different scales.
This workshop will be held from June 23-June 27, 2014 between 8 am and 4 pm at the Watson College of Education on UNCW’s campus. We are looking for about twenty grade 6-8 Science teachers for this workshop. There is a $40, non-refundable feeand the registration deadline for this workshop is Wednesday June 11, 2014.Lodging and meals are not included for this workshop.
Barrier Island History Workshop:
This week-long workshop is designed to give teachers an understanding of NC barrier islands and longleaf pine ecosystems. The workshop will focus on the relationship between history and ecology, in order to promote an interdisciplinary approach to teaching. The workshop will include daily fieldtrips, including kayaking, and trips to Zeke’s, Bald Head, and Masonboro Islands, Wrightsville Beach, and Holly Shelter Game Land.
***This course is physically demanding. Participants must be able to spend a few hours each day walking or kayaking
This workshop will be held from June 23-June 27, 2014 between 8 am and 4 pm. We are looking for about twenty STEM and Social Studies teachers of grades 6-12 for this workshop. There is a $40, non-refundable fee and the registration deadline for this workshop is Wednesday June 11, 2014. Lodging and meals are not included for this workshop.
Nuclear Technology and Radiation Workshop:
This one-day workshop will prepare attendees to teach the basics about radiation, how to detect radiation, and applications of nuclear science and technology in society. Teachers who complete the workshop will receive a wealth of materials including background information, hands-on activities, and supplementary resources. Additionally, each participant will receive a refurbished Civil Defense surplus Geiger counter to take back to his or her classroom.
The workshop will be held on July 24, 2014 between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm. Lunch will be provided. There is a $15 non-refundable fee per participant and the registration deadline for this workshop is June 24, 2014.
