A FREE Professional Development Institute for Teachers

In this two and ½ day teacher professional development institute participants will hear energy experts address the energy realities of the 21st century while considering the role of water in the mining and acquisition of energy sources, the generation of electricity, and the development of biofuels. Participants will interact with curricula and receive instructional materials aligned with the NC Essential Standards for Science. Field trips to local power plants will also be featured and transportation will be provided. This workshop is sponsored by UNC-Chapel Hill’s Institute for the Environment with funding provided by the Duke Energy Foundation. You can view the agenda from the 2013 workshop here.
This professional development opportunity is open to middle and high school science and technology teachers who address energy topics in their courses and who are employed by schools within either theDuke Energy or the Duke Energy Progress service area. Workshop participants are eligible to receive Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits, as well as Criteria III credit in the N.C. Environmental Education Certification Program through the N.C. Office of Environmental Education.
Overnight accommodations will be provided the evenings of August 5th and 6th for participants who live more than 35 miles from UNC; participants will be reimbursed for any mileage exceeding 60 miles at the IRS standard mileage rate for a personal vehicle (carpooling is encouraged).
Complimentary breakfast is provided at hotel; light morning and afternoon refreshments provided during workshop. Lunch will be provided on August 6th and 7th; optional dinner and evening program provided August 5th.
To successfully register for this workshop, you must:
1) Complete the online application before Friday May 30th;
2) Mail a $50 deposit (make check payable to Environmental Resource Program, and write “UNC Energy Workshop” in the memo line) to the address below to reserve a space at this event. This check will be held and not cashed. The check will be returned to you at the completion of the institute on August 7th.

There are a limited number of spaces for this institute; therefore we encourage you to reserve your space early. Once your application and check have been received, you will receive a registration confirmation email. If necessary, a waiting list will be established and your check will held and returned on June 1st if we are unable to provide a space for you. The deadline for submitting the deposit is June 5th, 2014. Cancellations must be made byJune 25, 2014, in order to receive a full refund on your deposit. Your $50 deposit will be forfeited if you cancel after June 25, 2014 and would be considered a tax-deductible gift to the Environmental Resource Program.
